OSHA publishes safe practices guide for construction-industry employers

On Dec.1, federal OSHA issued its Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs in Construction. OSHA created the 36-page guide to help construction-industry employers develop a "sound, flexible framework" to address safety and health issues. OSHA notes that small and medium-sized contractors will find the information particularly helpful.

The guide describes seven core elements that are the foundation of an effective workplace safety and health program, which many Oregon contractors will recognize:

Each core element is followed by several action items that can help contractors fine tune their programs.

Contractors who work on multiemployer sites may find the last core element particularly helpful. Communication and Coordination for Employers on Multiemployer Worksites describes what general contractors can do to ensure all workers at the site are aware of hazards and know how to control them.

OSHA also has a Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs webpage that includes case studies and information about the seven core elements.
