Forest Activities Advisory Committee

About

The Oregon OSHA Forest Activities Advisory Committee is an advisory group that provides assistance in the development, interpretation, and application of forest activity standards under Division 7. Members of the committee have included representatives of employers, experts in forest activities operations and safety, Oregon State University College of Forestry, Associated Oregon Loggers (AOL), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), USDA Forest Service, and Oregon OSHA.

Oregon OSHA and the committee continue to work together to address hazards involved with conventional work practices and new technology for the industry. The committee convenes quarterly.

Revised guidelines for tethered logging in Oregon

Employers who are considering using a tethered logging system in Oregon must ensure that the harvesting machine (feller bunchers, harvesters, loaders, shovels, etc.) to be tethered has been specified by its manufacturer to be operated on slopes of over 40 percent or 50 percent if the machine was designed for steep slopes. If not, employers must apply for and be granted a research variance prior to using the harvesting machine above its slope limit with a tethered logging system.
