Ground fault circuit interrupters GFCI

Topic index

Overview

GFCIs are life-saving devices that protect people from electrocution. Under normal conditions, electrical current moving through a circuit flows at the same rate all along the circuit; amperage flowing away from the electrical source should be the same amperage returning to the source. GFCIs sense imbalances or differences along the electrical circuit and shut it down when needed. For this reason, GFCI can be critical to workers in wet environments. Oregon OSHA’s requirements for GFCIs do not exempt work with intrinsically safe or double-insulated tools.

We get many calls and emails from employers asking the same question. It begins: “Which of your rules have requirements for…” You can finish the sentence with words like “recordkeeping,” “employee training,” and “written documents.” To answer those questions, we’ve organized these rules requirements into a filterable, sortable, searchable table.
