Process safety management

Topic index

Overview

Process safety management is about controlling unexpected releases of toxic, reactive, and flammable liquids and gases; the process safety management standard (Division 2, Subdivision H, 1910.119) applies mainly to the manufacturing industries that use them. The standard’s requirements cover hazards associated with using, storing, manufacturing, handling, or moving highly hazardous chemicals on site.

Regardless of the industry that uses hazardous chemicals, there is a potential for an accidental release any time they are not properly controlled.
