Oregon OSHA’s consultation services division offers employers two programs designed to achieve positive, lasting results for workplace health and safety: The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) and the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). Learn more about VPP and SHARP from Mark Hurliman, who manages the programs for Oregon OSHA.
SHARP coaches companies on how to effectively manage workplace safety and health. In turn, companies are recognized for their success in reaching specific benchmarks during the five-year program. The program is designed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of employers’ safety and health management systems. It also empowers companies to continuously improve and to become self-sufficient in managing workplace safety and health. Although the program is primarily set up to help small and mid-size businesses, it remains open to companies regardless of their size or type.

VPP encourages companies to effectively protect workers by going well beyond minimum safety requirements. The program is built on the idea that enforcement of safety regulations alone can never fully achieve the objectives of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. To be considered for VPP recognition, a company’s safety and health management system must excel in all areas, including management leadership, employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training. Ultimately, VPP companies provide ongoing, systematic protection of workers.
