This module begins with a powerful video of one man’s experience of losing his father to a disease caused by exposure to silica dust. This module explains what silica is, its different forms, and some places it can be found.
Start module 1
This module provides a brief history of an incident occurring in the United States that led to broader public knowledge of the harmful effects of respirable crystalline silica dust, then dives into illnesses and diseases caused by exposure to that dust. Later, a 3D animated video demonstrates how silicosis starts and what damage the disease can do inside the body
Start module 2
This module is more specific with which common building materials contain silica and how much is present. It describes job activities commonly used with building materials that can cause crystalline silica dust to become airborne and respirable. It also has a video of one worker’s experience in brick work without proper protection and the toll it has taken on him and his family.
Start module 3
This module covers the essentials of the Oregon OSHA Silica standard and explains the rules in place to protect workers from the hazards of respirable crystalline silica dust. Included are instructional videos that show protective measures workers can take while using powered tools to reduce the silica dust exposure.
