Walking-Working Surfaces online course

This multimedia course provides a comprehensive overview of key aspects of the walking-working surfaces rules and potential solutions to alleviate related hazards. These rules apply to all general industry workplaces in Oregon and cover a wide range of requirements. This includes ladders, ramps and runways, step bolts, manhole steps, stairways, dockboards, scaffolding, fall protection systems, and more. In the final module, we offer a certificate of completion after passing a short quiz, as well as links to additional resources including Oregon OSHA consultation.

Module content

This module introduces walking-working surfaces and the Oregon OSHA rules in the Division 2 General Industry standard. It explains who is affected, covers general requirements for surface conditions and inspection, maintenance, and repair, and reviews additional Oregon-specific requirements, with videos illustrating how the rules apply.

This module covers fall protection systems that employers use to prevent falls in general industry workplaces. It reviews trigger heights and walks through the requirements for guardrail systems, handrails and stair rail systems, safety net systems, designated areas, hole covers, ladder safety systems, personal fall protection systems, and grab handles.

This module discusses situations where employers are required to install fall protection systems. It covers unprotected sides and edges, hoist areas, holes and openings, repair pits, outdoor advertising, slaughtering facility platforms, low-slope roofs, and dangerous equipment, along with the requirements for protecting workers from falling objects.

This module details requirements for step bolts, manhole steps, stairways, dockboards, and ramps and runways. It explains the specifications for each, including the differences between standard, spiral, ship, and alternating tread-type stairs.
