Portable power tools

Topic index

Overview

Portable power tools are generally classified by their power source: electric, pneumatic, liquid fuel, hydraulic, and powder-actuated. Follow these five safe practices to prevent injuries caused by portable power tools:

  • Maintain them to keep them in good condition
  • Use the right tool for the job
  • Examine each tool for damage before using it; do not use damaged tools
  • Operate tools following the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Use the personal protective equipment appropriate for the tool
  • Checklists
  • Hazard alerts
  • References
    • Rules with requirements
We get many calls and emails from employers asking the same question. It begins: “Which of your rules have requirements for…” You can finish the sentence with words like “recordkeeping,” “employee training,” and “written documents.” To answer those questions, we’ve organized these rules requirements into a filterable, sortable, searchable table.
