Overview

When a human heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in only a few minutes and the person may die within eight to 10 minutes. CPR can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain until more complete medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.

To learn CPR properly, take an accredited first-aid training course that includes CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator. If you don’t have CPR training and have immediate access to a phone, call 911 before beginning CPR. The dispatcher can instruct you in the proper procedures until help arrives.

There are some Oregon OSHA rules that require CPR-trained employees – such as confined space rescue and forest activities. And for businesses located where EMS response time exceeds five minutes, Oregon OSHA recommends that at least one employee is CPR trained.
