Where can I find Oregon OSHA’s requirements for maintenance, service, and repair of powered industrial trucks used in the workplace? Are there any requirements for annual inspections?
Oregon OSHA recommends employers refer to their powered industrial truck owner’s manual for maintenance, service, and repair information. Oregon OSHA does not have requirements for annual inspections of powered industrial trucks.
Oregon OSHA’s
maintenance and requirements for powered industrial trucks are covered in 1910.178(p) and 1910.178(q). Specifically:
- 1910.178(p)(1): If at any time a powered industrial truck is found to be in need of repair, defective, or in any way unsafe, the truck shall be taken out of service until it has been restored to safe operating condition.
- 1910.178(q)(7): Industrial trucks shall be examined before being placed in service, and shall not be placed in service if the examination shows any condition adversely affecting the safety of the vehicle. Such examination shall be made at least daily. Where industrial trucks are used on a round-the-clock basis, they shall be examined after each shift. Defects when found shall be immediately reported and corrected.
Powered industrial truck inspections. At a minimum, before start-up and before each shift, each operator or inspector should do a vehicle walk-around including a visual examination of tires and wheels, hoist chains, data plate, and the general overall condition of the vehicle. After start-up, the operator should check the steering, service brake, park brake, and hydraulic controls for proper function. Vehicle inspections may be done by the operator or a designated person with the skills and training to perform the task.
