Bloodborne pathogens

Overview

Bloodborne pathogens are microbes such as viruses and bacteria that are carried in blood and can cause disease when transmitted from an infected person through blood and certain body fluids.

Bloodborne pathogens can cause serious illness and death from illnesses such hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) from HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus. Oregon employers whose employees are exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials are covered by the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 1910.1030.
